Spotlight on Sydney Bethay, Master Stylist at Salon Posta
Marietta is home to so many talented individuals, and Sydney Bethay is no exception. A master stylist at Salon Posta, Sydney has been honing her craft and building a loyal following thanks to her creativity, professionalism, and love for her work. I’ve personally had the pleasure of sitting in Sydney’s chair and I am always impressed with her ability to listen and help me to feel and look my best.
Background & Inspiration
How did you get started in the hair industry? What inspired you to become a stylist?
Straight out of high school, I went to college, but after about a year, I realized college just wasn’t for me. I started looking at other options, like changing my major or transferring schools. That’s when my mom suggested cosmetology school. I’d always enjoyed doing my friends’ hair and makeup, but I never thought of it as a career. When she brought it up, I thought, “Why not?” I ended up loving it and haven’t looked back since.
Did you always know you wanted to do hair, or did you discover your passion along the way?
Not at first! It wasn’t until I actually went to hair school that I discovered my passion for doing hair.
Where did you train, and what’s one lesson that stuck with you?
I went to cosmetology school at The Paul Mitchell in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. One of the biggest lessons I learned is to never limit myself when it comes to the services I offer. Staying open to new techniques and trends keeps me from feeling stuck or bored in my work. It’s also a reminder to take leaps and embrace challenges.
Style & Expertise
Your Instagram handle, @the_ginganinja, is so fun! How did that come about?
Thank you! My original handle was @stylesbySydney, but it felt kind of bland. I noticed so many stylists use something similar, so I wanted something memorable. One of my teachers, Josh, used to call us “hair ninjas,” and since I’m a redhead, I combined the two and came up with @the_ginganinja.
How would you describe your personal style when it comes to hair?
It’s hard to define because I get such a variety of clients, but I’d say my style leans toward 70s and 80s influences. I love looks inspired by Brigitte Bardot and Farrah Fawcett.
What’s your favorite hair trend right now, and is there one you hope never comes back?
I’m obsessed with layered cuts and big, bouncy blowouts. Blowouts are one of my favorite services because they’re so satisfying to create. As for trends I hope never come back—definitely the “broccoli haircut.” It’s that shaved sides look with a curly mop on top, and it just reminds me of a piece of broccoli!
If someone’s looking to refresh their look, what’s one easy change you’d recommend?
Switching up your haircut is the easiest and least permanent change. Whether it’s going shorter, growing it out, or trying bangs, a haircut can make a big difference without the commitment of color.
What’s one product you swear by?
The Kérastase scalp serums are incredible. They promote healthy scalp care, which is essential for healthy hair. It’s a product everyone can benefit from!
Challenges & Motivation
What’s been the most rewarding part of your career so far?
It might sound cheesy, but making my clients happy is the most rewarding part. You never know what someone is going through, so being able to brighten their day—even for just a little while—makes it all worthwhile.
How do you stay motivated and inspired creatively?
I love learning from other stylists on social media. I save techniques that inspire me, practice them on mannequins or in classes, and then offer them to my clients. It keeps me excited about my work and gives my clients something new to look forward to.
Have you faced any challenges as a young stylist, and how did you overcome them?
Being a young stylist with just three years of experience can be intimidating. Clients often ask how long I’ve been doing hair, and it’s nerve-wracking to admit I’m still early in my career. But I’ve learned to project confidence—“fake it till you make it” really does work! Over time, that confidence becomes real, and clients see it too.
Personal Touch
If you weren’t doing hair, what would you be doing?
I’d probably be a science teacher or running my own Etsy shop. I actually have an embroidery machine I need to learn how to use, so maybe I’d be doing something creative with that!
What’s your go-to coffee order before a busy day at the salon?
I actually steer clear of caffeine—it makes me bounce off the walls! My go-to is usually a Starbucks refresher or lemonade.
If you could do anyone’s hair, who would it be and why?
If I could go back in time, I’d love to do Amy Winehouse’s hair. I’m obsessed with 60s-80s styles, and Amy’s beehive look was iconic. If it were normal to wear a beehive every day, I absolutely would!
Community Focus
Marietta has such a tight-knit community. What’s your favorite thing about working with local clients?
I love how my clients have introduced me to so many new places in the area. Even though I moved here eight years ago, I only recently started exploring Marietta Square. As a foodie, it’s been amazing to discover new restaurants and cafes through their recommendations. Now, I can share those spots with new clients too!
How can people book with you, and where can they follow you?
To book an appointment, call Salon Posta at (770) 415-2221 and ask for Sydney. You can also follow me on Instagram @the_ginganinja—feel free to DM me with questions or ideas for your next look!
Sydney’s passion for her craft and dedication to her clients are what make her stand out in the Marietta community. Whether you’re looking for a simple refresh or a bold new style, you’re in good hands with Sydney at Salon Posta!
